TPO vs Silicone
Silicone outperforms all other roofing systems in every aspect
The Silicone Advantage
Cost
Restoring a roof costs less! Silicone costs more than TPO pound-for-pound because it is a superior waterproof material, but restoring with silicone is cheaper overall. This is because silicone's application process requires less labor and generates no waste, while TPO installations add 10 to 20 percent waste. Thus, silicone is the better choice. WINNER = SILICONE
Performance Layer
Silicone roofs are applied at 22, 32, or 38 mil thicknesses, while TPO roofs are 60 or 90 mils thick. This 60 or 90 mil TPO thickness is misleading as it includes all three layers of the TPO (waterproof layer, base, and scrim). TPO's actual waterproof layer is only 17 mils. Thus, a 60 or 90-mil TPO has less waterproof capability than Silicone's minimum 22 mil application. This distinction is essential.

Silicone restoration seals and repairs the existing waterproof layer while adding extra waterproofing, effectively more than doubling its protection. In contrast, installing a TPO overlay damages the existing waterproof layer by drilling screws through it, making it ineffective. It makes sense to keep the existing waterproof layer and add to it.
WINNER = SILICONE
Material Quality
When comparing roofing materials, silicone is far superior to TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin). TPO, made from polypropylene (plastic), is more vulnerable to environmental factors and has a shorter lifespan. In contrast, silicone, made from silica derived from sand, offers enhanced durability and better resistance to the elements.
WINNER = SILICONE
Ponding Water
Silicone coatings provide excellent leak protection and are impervious to ponding water, unlike TPO, which deteriorates when exposed to it. Silicone's chemical makeup is superior to that of TPO. WINNER = SILICONE
Lifespan
Silicone outperforms TPO in lifespan due to its superior chemical properties. While TPO roofs often face issues like chalking and cracking and failing seams within 10 years, silicone roofs resist harsh weather and UV degradation, leading to longer durability. This results in better long-term protection for your building and fewer repairs, making silicone the more economical choice. WINNER = SILICONE
Monolithic System
Silicone restoration provides a seamless waterproofing layer that is applied in liquid form, eliminating vulnerabilities found in traditional roofing systems like TPO, where seams often fail first. This monolithic layer enhances durability and offers reliable protection against water damage. WINNER = SILICONE
Installation
Silicone outperforms TPO in installation. It bonds directly to the existing roof, making it a faster and non-invasive process. In contrast, TPO requires invasive removal or drilling thousands of screw holes, compromising roof integrity and posing leak risks. This comparison highlights silicone's superiority, ensuring confidence and security in your investment. WINNER = SILICONE.
Preservation
Silicone roof restoration preserves the underlying materials, eliminating the need for future tear-offs or overlays. You can recoat with silicone after your warranty expires to renew it. Silicone is the last roof you'll ever need. WINNER = SILICONE
Warranty
Silicone restoration warranties are clear: 22 mils = 10 years, 32 mils = 15 years, and 38 mils = 20 years. More silicone means a longer warranty. In contrast, TPO warranties don’t improve the product itself; paying more only enhances the warranty without increasing the thickness of the waterproof layer. WINNER = SILICONE
Additional Benefits
-
WARRANTY - Restoration is a new roof with 10, 15, and 20-year warranties.
-
RENEWABLE - When the warranty expires, simply clean the roof and recoat it. There will never be a need to remove the roof again.
-
SEAMLESS - A fluid-applied roof system is a seamless solution that eliminates seam-related failures in traditional roofs.
-
BONDING - Roof restoration is a fluid-applied system 100% bonded to the existing structure.
-
DETERIORATION - Silicone is weather-resistant and won't chalk, fade, peel, or crack like other roofing materials.
-
NON-INVASIVE - No material removal or drilling screws into your deck, unlike other roof systems.
-
PONDING WATER - Silicone resists ponding water, unlike other roofing materials.
-
GREASE VENTS - Unlike other roofing materials, silicone is resistant to animal fat and won't be damaged by grease vents.
-
MOLD - Silicone roof coatings are resistant to mold and mildew.
-
TAX WRITE OFF - Roof restoration costs are deductible in the same year, unlike traditional roofs.
-
DURABLE - Silicone is durable and made from silica, a sand derivative. TPO (thermoplastic Polyolefin) is made from plastic.
-
SUPERIROR QUALITY - Silicone is considered the best roofing material because of its waterproof characteristics and durability.
-
ECO FRIENDLY - Silicone roofing is an eco-friendly option with low to no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and high reflectivity, which reduces heat gain. Its long lifespan decreases the need for frequent replacements, making it a sustainable choice compared to all other roofing materials.
-
WATERPROOF LAYER - Adding a new performance layer will repair the old one and double waterproofing, surpassing conventional roofing methods.
